LONDON HOLIDAY

NOVEMBER 11-18, 2012

Sunday November 11
Early evening departure from the Twin Cities to London Heathrow Airport, or independent departures.
Monday November 12Dinner
Arrival in London and transfer to the deluxe Waldorf Hilton Hotel, wonderfully located near Covent Garden on Aldwych Street. Rest or explore the city. In the evening an elegant Welcome to London dinner at our hotel.
Tuesday November 13
Breakfast at the hotel. This morning a tour of the historic city of London. Intended as an introduction or refresher to the city, we'll hit the high spots, including Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, Parliament, the Tower of London and St. Paul's Cathedral. We will visit one of the smallest of the London national museums, The Wallace Collection. Housed in a historic townhouse, the Wallace has an unsurpassed collection of French 18th century paintings, furniture and porcelain, in addition to superb Old Master paintings. The afternoon is free. In the evening a concert at Barbican Centre by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra: Wagner's Siegfried Idyll, the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto and Beethoven's Symphony No. 6, The Pastoral.
Wednesday November 14
Breakfast at the hotel. The entire day and evening are free for your own activities; perhaps a visit to the National Gallery of Art, or a musical or play at one of the West End theaters. This evening enjoy a quiet dinner, or take in a concert by the London Philharmonic at Royal Festival Hall. The program includes the Beethoven Triple Concerto and Schuman's Symphony No. 2. Tickets for optional performances can be arranged for you in advance.
Thursday November 15
Cecilia Bartoli
Cecilia Bartoli
Breakfast at the hotel. A free day for your own activities. In the evening, we are fortunate to have obtained tickets to what is sure to be a sold-out concert by internationally known mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli at the Barbican Centre. Ms. Bartoli rarely sings in the United States, so this is a unique opportunity to hear this incredible artist. She will be appearing with the Basel Chamber Orchestra.
Friday November 16Lunch
Roberto Alagna
Roberto Alagna
Breakfast at the hotel, followed by an excursion to Blenheim Palace near Oxford, the ancestral home of the first Duke of Marlborough, John Churchill, and the birthplace of Winston Churchill. Often called the greatest palace in Britain, Blenheim, a World Heritage Site, features a 2,000-acre garden designed in the 18th century by Capability Brown. Lunch together at a local restaurant. In the evening we go to the Royal Opera at Covent Garden, just a few blocks from our hotel, for a performance of Donizetti's charming comic opera L'elisir d'amore, with Roberto Alagna as Nemorino and Aleksandra Kurzak as Adina. Conductor is Bruno Campanella. In Italian with English titles.
Saturday November 17
Breakfast at the hotel. Our final day in London is free for the activities of your choice, perhaps a matinee at one of the nearby West End theaters. In the evening our final performance, Mozart's immortal Don Giovanni at the English National Opera, in an innovative production by Rufus Norris. As is the practice at the ENO, the opera will be sung in English.
